All pitchers have different approaches to the Spring Training atmosphere. While they all have the same basic goals to achieve, they go about it in different ways. It’s only natural I guess since we all are so individually different. The time needed to focus on velocity, control and arm strength is very important to a starting pitcher’s season especially. Dan Straily is going about his season in the best way possible.
Last season, Straily made some noise during a stretch run with the playoff bound Oakland Athletics but isn’t walking around touting about that to everyone he sees. Instead he came to camp, not expecting a locker and a spot in the rotation but rather wanting to work on being a good pitcher. That’s it.
That really is where his focus lies. He is preparing for a long season with no preconceived notions of where that season will be spent. That decision isn’t under his control, he knows it and he is willing to go out every day and work on the things he can control.
You know what? That means that he probably will be in the big leagues pitching for the A’s before this season is up, if he goes down to triple-A at all. I say that simply because someone with that mature outlook and healthy attitude combined with good stuff already is big league material.
