There is a third base prospect in Colorado Rockies camp that is threatening to break Spring Training in a big way. Nolan Arenado is highly thought of in the system. He’s the second ranked prospect overall for the Rockies franchise. So far this spring he is showing both offensive and defensive abilities that could lead him to a successful everyday third base job very soon.

The biggest noise he has made so far wasn’t with his bat but rather with his awareness on defense. It’s not every day that you see a triple-play in Spring Training, regular season games or the postseason. What happened makes it something that really is credited to Arenado. The ball was hit to him near the third base bag. He stepped on third base for the first out and then prepared to throw. Instead of throwing across to first which is the normal next step, Arenado had the awareness to throw to second. The throw from there to first beat the runner by a half-step.

What was the result? This kid pays attention naturally to the game around him. Even just a few games into Spring Training he is fully aware of where the runners are, how many outs there are and everything else that matters. He paid attention to defensive positioning so that he had a chance to get to the ball quickly. Everything about this play leads you to be able to clearly see that Arenado could be something extra special with his offensive capability added in.
