There comes a time in a baseball player’s career that he could easily become known as a drifter of sorts. In baseball terms that would mean he hops from team to team while riding several one or two year contracts. The only way to avoid that fate, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, is to find a place that the veteran can really enjoy playing for the rest of his career. Omar Infante might have found that place in the team of the Detroit Tigers.
In return for their keeping him around, the Tigers get a very productive veteran who is always solid in the field. Infante is one that fans and players like to be around and he always works hard to do his best. That is a place where he leads by example and it’s the perfect place for a veteran to be. Obviously the Tigers have had success while he has been there but he could still do more for the team.
Offensively he is productive but he could do better. He still has the speed and swing to do better than single digit homers and a .250 batting average. To really maximize his current potential I think he would need to reach ten to fifteen homers and over sixty runs batted in. Obviously for a man on this team, getting on base in front of their sluggers means scoring runs. An average around .285 and up would raise his runs scored to a very respectable level. Maybe if he does this, he will never have to call another team’s clubhouse home.
