Trevor Bauer is one of the highly touted prospects that didn’t quite blow up the league when he was called up for the Arizona Diamondbacks last season. His stuff was pretty good but his control was nonexistent. The control issues led to the Diamondbacks’ opinion of him to drop enough that they were willing to trade him. Now in Spring Training with the Cleveland Indians, Bauer is out to prove that his upside is now.
The Indians are one of the many teams that have a rotation spot open for their starting pitching. There are veterans and young pitchers alike all vying for that spot in the Indians starting five but right now it appears that Bauer might have a finger hold on at least one of them. His stuff has been as good as ever this spring and his control has been perfect. He issued no walks during his first outing.
For Terry Francona the player they have in Bauer is one that he very much likes. His live arm and good stuff when combined with better control that can only improve with good work ethic puts Bauer in a position where you understand why he was so highly thought of. There is a chance he would miss the starting five out of Spring Training. Even in that case Francona’s words suggest that he is keeping an eye on Bauer with plans to pitch him in the very near future.
