Michael Cuddyer Giving Colorado Rockies’ Moral a Boost with Shirts

The Colorado Rockies were not very good last year. They didn’t lose a hundred games but they did lose ninety-eight. Michael Cuddyer , who arrived last season in Colorado after a career spent with the Minnesota Twins, was fairly well productive in the outfield but the team just didn’t win games. Cuddyer thinks he knows why and was determined to do something about it. This is my favorite story from Spring Training thus far.

Cuddyer arrived in camp this year fully aware that the Rockies beat themselves a lot last year with mistakes. They had potential to be much better than they were but when you make mistakes like they did, or as Cuddyer puts it ‘beat yourself’, you only have your team to blame. That is why Cuddyer thought he would motivate his team to play better this season. He didn’t do it with a speech or by example, though those are factors as well. He did it with shirts.

This is genius. He arrived with a bunch of shirts that have language too colorful for this article but the basic message is for the Rockies to beat the other team, not themselves. It has been a huge hit with his teammates and has further solidified Cuddyer’s leadership role with the team. If the Rockies play better this season, I don’t think it would be a stretch to say these shirts are a big part of the reason why.
