Tyler Skaggs is one of the promising younger prospects vying for the final spot in the Arizona Diamondbacks starting rotation. All signs have been that he had as good of a chance as anyone up until this point. Now it is beginning to look like he might not quite be ready for the big league club just yet.

In his latest start he had what you might call a pretty terrible outing. He gave up three runs, three hits, issued two walks, threw a wild pitch and balked. That is a bad line for one inning. Of course it is Spring Training but even then a few negative signs show up in an outing like this. His manager pointed out that he was surely pressing and trying to win the job instead of focusing on improving his pitching.

Where they would like Skaggs to concentrate on getting better control of his breaking stuff and fastball, Skaggs is pressing and trying to win a job. That is completely understandable but it shows a little bit of immaturity as far as having the ability to go out in the big leagues and be calm enough to get the best hitters in the world out.

I think Skaggs is going to be a good pitcher. He might even turn out to be one of the great pitchers in this organization for the foreseeable future. He just isn’t there yet. Considering how good his upside is, the Diamondbacks would be better served by allowing him some more time to get ready in the minors before they put the pressure of full time big league status on him. Randall Delgado already has some experience and will probably wind up getting the fifth starter job for now anyway.
