Cuba’s big slugger, Jose Abreu, is probably the greatest hitter you’ve never heard of.

Abreu will need to lead Cuba in the 2o13 World Baseball Classic for Cuba to be successful. Cuba is the No.1 ranked team in the country right now, so they have some good players. But, Abreu will need to step up and lead this team to the WBC promised land.

Abreu has to be the biggest MLB prospect on Cuba’s roster right now. He is listed at six-foot-three, but, after seeing him on TV, he has to be much bigger than that. After Abreu posted a slash line of .453/.597/.986, he had people saying he could be the best hitter in baseball.

Sure, he hasn’t played in Major League Baseball yet, but the guy hit .453! How could you disagree with that? Sorry, I had to gawk at Abreu’s numbers for a second.

This guy can flat out hit. There is no way around it. He is going to have to do just that if Cuba wants to win this year’s World Baseball Classic. If anyone in this tournament could be a team on their back, it is Abreu. He could be a bona fide superstar in America.

In the first game for Cuba in this year’s World Baseball Classic, Abreu had one hit in four plate appearances. Cuba won their game against Brasil by a 5-2 score. The entirety of Cuba’s success is due in part to the success of Jose Abreu. If he contributes, Cuba will do well.

As the baseball fan that I am, I know I will be keeping an eye on Cuba’s Abreu. You should too – he’ll be in the majors soon enough.
