The Cuban national team absolutely demolished China to move to 2-0 in World Baseball Classic play. Cuba had 15 hits and scored 12 runs. It was almost sad what Cuba did to China.
One of the reasons the score was so bad was because of the long ball. Cuba hit two home runs, including a grand slam coming off of the bat of big slugger Jose Abreu. Abreu is a guy I have mentioned in the past. He can flat out rake and he showed that yesterday by collecting five RBIs on two hits. This game only lasted seven innings due to a mercy rule. That alone should tell you how lopsided this game was.
Cuba will need to keep those bats rolling if they want to continue winning. As we saw in this game, these pitchers will make mistakes and these hitters are going to need to capitalize on those mistakes. Cuba is the number one ranked team in the world and they have shown that so far in this World Baseball Classic. The 15-0 shellacking of China was impressive, to say the least.
Cuba was already a favorite to move onto the next round, but if they keep this up, we could be talking about a new champion of the World Baseball Classic. As you know, Japan is has been the only champion since the World Baseball Classic’s inaugural season. But if Cuba can keep this up, we may be singing a different song when this is all said and done.
Cuba will need Abreu and others to keep the big bats rolling if they want to win it all. Also, the pitching will have to do their job and make as few mistakes as possible.
