Boston Red Sox: Deven Marrero Sent to Minor League Camp

The Boston Red Sox are now a few weeks into spring training for the 2013 season. Friday came the first round of cuts for the team. The Red Sox optioned Drake Britton to Double-A Portland Sea Dogs, while assigning Justin Henry and Deven Marrero to minor league camp.

Marrero was the Red Sox first pick, 24th overall, in the 2012 June Amateur Draft. Prior to the season, Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com listed the shortstop the Red Sox’s 10th ranked prospect in the organization.

This spring the 22-year-old made it into three spring training games for the Red Sox, going 1-for-2.

Marrero was the first Red Sox position player since Scott Hatteberg to be invited to big league camp the year after being drafted. The ability to play with Dustin Pedroia, fellow Arizona State University alumn, will prove to be invaluable. Getting a closer look at one of the best infielders in the game was something that he will remember for his entire major league career. Pedroia’s work ethic, ability to play the field and his experience with the Red Sox can only be good things to show an up-and-coming prospect.

Last season, Marrero spent his first part of his professional career with the short season Single-A Lowell Spinners. He played in 64 games and batted .268 with 14 doubles, 2 homers and 24 stolen bases. While playing the field, he committed nine errors for a .939 field percentage. It is expected he will join the Single-A Advance Salem Red Sox in Virginia for the 2013 season, however it won’t be long before he is playing at Fenway Park.
