Every once in a while a prospect comes along that blows everyone’s mind. These are the type that march regularly through the levels of the minor leagues and dominate every one of them. Oscar Taveras of the St. Louis Cardinals is one such player. He figures this season to fill out the triple-A squad and if he continues that he has been, he won’t be there for long.
There have been comparisons all over baseball for this kid. One of the most flattering is the saying that he reminds people of a young Barry Bonds with his speed and power combination and specifically the short quick speed of his bat to that of Bonds. No matter whom you are in the game of baseball, if you get compared to Bonds, especially early Bonds, that is some kind of compliment worth holding on to.
This kid is capable of hitting for well over .300 average and joining the ever rare 30/30 club with thirty steels and thirty homers. He has all five tools of a five tool player only because there isn’t a sixth. If there were a sixth I’m sure he would have it as well. So, why don’t they just keep him? Well, they kind of have enough outfielders anyway and fairly talented ones at that. Since they do not want to mess with his learning schedule, he’ll stay down most of this year.
That’ll be it though. Carlos Beltran’s contract runs out after this season and you can expect that he will not return in 2014. The Cardinals will likely thank Beltran for his time in right field and bring in the vaunted prospect Taveras to become the supposed next great outfielder. Will it happen? Only time will tell; but it looks very promising for now.
