Second Look at the Possible 2013 Red Sox Roster Breakdown
It is halfway through camp and the Boston Red Sox are starting to be hit by the injury bug. Nothing terrible has happened outside of David Ortiz being shut down for five to seven days due to lingering issues with the heel injury he suffered last season.
The Red Sox depth will likely be tested to start the season, but Boston looks like they will be full-strength by May at the latest. The big question for the Red Sox is if the Ortiz injury has opened the door wide enough for top prospect Jackie Bradley Jr. to make the opening day roster.
Here is the second take at what the potential opening day roster might look like.
Pitching staff might breakdown (12): Jon Lester, Clay Buchholz, John Lackey, Ryan Dempster and Felix Doubront would start the season in the rotation. The rotation has looked solid.
Joel Hanrahan, Andrew Bailey, Koji Uehara, Andrew Miller, Daniel Bard, Alfredo Aceves and Junichi Tazawa would make up the Red Sox bullpen. Hanrahan and Bailey have struggled so far this spring.
Aceves replaces Craig Breslow for this roster, but I would still expect the Red Sox to try and move him before opening day.
Disabled List (3): Ortiz, Breslow and Franklin Morales.
Catchers (2): David Ross and Jarrod Saltalamacchia. Same, no changes.
Infield (7): Mike Napoli, Dustin Pedroia, Stephen Drew, Will Middlebrooks, Mike Carp, Pedro Ciriaco, Daniel Nava. Ortiz goes on the DL and the Red Sox have acquired Carp since the first draft. Nava replaces Lyle Overbay on the roster. Drew’s concussion bears watching.
Outfield (4): Jonny Gomes, Jacoby Ellsbury, Shane Victorino, Ryan Sweeney. Right now, no changes, but Bradley Jr. has been the best player in camp and with the Ortiz injury, the Red Sox could take him to New York.
Players on the bubble (7): Clayton Mortensen, Ryan Lavarnway, Mitch Maier, Bradley Jr., Allen Webster, Overbay and Jose Iglesias. Webster has been electric in camp. Injuries could allow any of the bubble players to make the roster.
The Red Sox could find themselves in more platoon situations than expected when they initially looked at the roster this winter.
The road between Boston and Pawtucket figures to be in overdrive for most of the season, especially with Webster, Lavarnway, Iglesias and Bradley Jr. appearing to be on the brink this spring.
