San Diego Padres third baseman Chase Headley is poised to replace the injured David Wright at the World Baseball Classic should the Americans advance in the tourney. Team USA will need to beat Puerto Rico in order to advance to the semi-finals.
The New York Mets experienced their worst nightmare when Wright suffered a sore back and was unable to play in the game against the Dominican Republic on Thursday. Mets fans can breathe a collective sigh of relief as the injury appears precautionary but definitely not an injury you want to see your franchise player’s name associated with. Wright last played in the Americans victory over Puerto Rico collecting two hits and five runs batted in. Captain America was having a stellar tourney prior to the injury hitting .526 in the four games he played.
Headley will be an admirable replacement for Wright should Team USA call upon his services having a career season in 2012. The 28 year old won a gold glove and a silver slugger award batting .286 with 31 home runs and 115 runs batted in last season for the Padres. Headley is hitting at a .440 clip in ten games this spring with San Diego.
Headley will play in an exhibition game today against the Los Angeles Dodgers and then sit and wait for the Americans to advance. Look for Headley to be suited up for Team USA at the hot corner in the first game of the semi-finals should they make it that far.
