David Murphy has played very well in left field for the Texas Rangers, but there are a couple of young outfielders who are both having an incredible spring training.
Those two young guys are Craig Gentry and Leonys Martin.
As we know the Rangers are in need of a center fielder. It looks like Gentry is going to be that guy. But with the way Martin has been playing, you can’t justify not giving him a chance.
Another player who is getting lost in this mix is Julio Borbon. Borbon is also having a very good spring and it looks realistic that he is playing himself onto another team.
By that I mean that Borbon is playing very well, but not well enough to play him instead of Gentry or Martin. He would be a very good trade piece.
All three of these young guys are very fast and are very talented defenders who just need to develop offensively.
The way this Rangers team has been moving this offseason with the losses of older players such as Josh Hamilton, Mike Napoli and Michael Young makes me believe that they are looking to get younger.
Murphy is a very good player who could be a leader on this team, but I think it is time for the Rangers to move on from him and into a new age of young players that will lead this team for years to come.
I don’t know if Gentry and Martin will be amazing players, but it is time to give them a chance during real competition.
