I have written many times this offseason about how many teams should sign Lohse, but the team I expected most was the Rangers.
The Rangers still have a big need at the top of their rotation and with Lohse off the market that takes away the option I thought would be best for the team. And now there are not any top of the line free agent starters left.
What options does this leave on the table you may ask? There is the still obvious option of trading for many players such as Rick Porcello who is still on the market, but the Rangers do not want to give up the talent required to get someone who can lead their rotation.
Now that Lohse is out of the question and the Rangers seem resistant to move on any big trades, it is beginning to look like Jon Daniels is willing to wait for young starters like Wilmer Font and Cody Buckel who are both expected to be ready in the next couple of seasons.
I still think the Rangers need to go out and make a trade for someone who can sit at the top of this rotation because, though I like him, Matt Harrison should not be leading any rotation. Let alone one on a team that needs to compete against a very powerful division.
If the Rangers aren’t willing to bring in some talent to lead, I don’t know if they are going to be able to compete this season.
