The Arizona Diamondbacks have one of the best catchers in MLB in Miguel Montero. Montero can be a potential MVP candidate this season for the Diamondbacks with the departure of Justin Upton, and he showed that he could produce offensively as indicated by .286/.391/.829 triple-slash last season.
Montero has always been a great offensive player, but the one area of his game that needed work was his defense. Montero has been working hard to improve his defensive skills as a catcher, and he has improved dramatically in this area in the past seasons.
The hard work that Montero had put forth has shown up in his ability throw runners out attempting to steal bases against him. In the last two seasons, he has caught at least 40 percent of the runners trying to steal bases, which ranks him in the top five in the NL.
The ability to throw runners out a high rate helps out the pitching staff as they have the confidence that if a player who has speed gets on base, he will be thrown out by Montero.
Another area where Montero is excellent at is his durability as a catcher. Over the last two seasons, he has caught at least 1,160 innings for Arizona. Montero has also showed that last season he can be a clutch hitter, as indicated by .360/.515./1.155 triple-slash when there are runners in scoring position with two outs.
The Diamondbacks have a complete catcher in Montero that can play solid defense, and be a factor on offense. He will be an MVP candidate for Arizona this season.
