Armed with a new contract and a great outing on opening day for his team, Chris Sale can surely say that he is the ace of the Chicago White Sox pitching staff. There is another man there that could have claimed that honor this year as he has in recent years. Jake Peavy is still plugging away in that White Sox uniform and feels better this season than he ever has since he came to Chicago. That might be a really good thing for this team.
Sale has already proved that he is a top pitcher in the American League and he clearly intends to remain there. Peavy has been a good pitcher for a long time and knows that Sale is the man now. Peavy actually wanted Sale to get the opening day nod in front of him. To his credit, Sale was pushing for the veteran Peavy to get the opening day job. Peavy was right however, Sale is the ace and he showed why in a win against a tough James Shields led Kansas City Royals team.
As he goes out against the same team today and yet another of the Royals improved starters in Ervin Santana, Peavy wants to prove that he is as good this season and probably better than he has ever been with the Sox. Peavy is a veteran for a reason and he knows that things happen as pitchers go on through their thirties and get up in age. Peavy still has plenty left however. Look for him to prove that while he might not be the ace of the Sox staff, he certainly is still the veteran ace of the staff.
