Miami Marlins’ First Baseman Casey Kotchman Lands On Disabled List

Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

As if things could not get worse for the Miami Marlins, the injury bug is still buzzing around the players and it bit another one of the Marlins’ first basemen. This time, Casey Kotchman is the latest Marlins infielder to get injured. Kotchman was injured in Wednesday night’s game against the Washington Nationals when he strained his hamstring running to first base in the fifth inning of the game.

Kotchman will join Joe Mahoney and Logan Morrison on the disabled list. Both players were supposed to be first basemen for the team, but when Morrison was still not ready for Opening Day and Mahoney went down in Spring Training, Kotchman had to step up even though he was only signed to a minor league contract prior to the start of the season.

Greg Dobbs got the start against the Marlins Thursday afternoon, but they could have another infielder for the series against the New York Mets over the weekend. For the time being, Austin Kearns, Chris Valaika and even Miguel Olivo could be short-term options for the Marlins. Matt Downs is also lurking in the minor leagues and could be a possible call-up for the time being.

Mahoney is expected to be reinstated from the disabled list this weekend. However, he is not expected to be ready for another seven to 10 days.
