The big story in Seattle is one that everyone could say with me at this point. The Seattle Mariners gave a ton of money to Felix Hernandez and he looks to lead the pitching staff through the season. What some might not have expected is for them and not the Los Angeles Angels to be leading in the power department and scoring tons of runs as they are the ones that sit atop the division in the early going. That might surprise a few.
Michael Morse probably is not one that is surprised. So far the Mariners left fielder looks to be one of the more powerful offensive players in all of Major League Baseball instead of a journeyman outfielder that has played for several teams in his career. Morse has been crushing the ball so far with three homers and five RBI going into Thursday’s game against the Oakland Athletics. It is Morse who is leading the charge atop the AL West instead of other power names you might have expected like Hamilton or Pujols.
Whether or not this will continue as it is, get better or slack off is impossible to know. What we do know is that Morse has the potential to put up thirty homers and a hundred RBI over the course of a season if he remains healthy throughout. The Mariners certainly hope he will. So far it appears that the pitching will be lights out for the first couple of pitchers, including of course Hernandez, and then possible fall off a bit. A strong offense will go a long way towards evening out those odds.
