Seattle Mariners: Michael Morse Shows Impressive Power In Opening Series

When the Seattle Mariners acquired outfielder Michael Morse from the Washington Nationals over the winter, the team and fans had very high expectations for the veteran slugger.

Through the first four games of the season I think Morse has lived up to those expectations, hitting four home runs in his first four games in his second stint with the Mariners. In his first stint with the team, Morse only hit three home runs in 106 games from 2005-2008.

“I’m just getting some good pitches to hit, trying to put the barrel on the ball and just let things happen,” Morse told Mariners.com.

In the Mariners’ win on Tuesday Morse showed his pure strength, hitting an opposite-field homer off of a two strike offering from Oakland Athletics pitcher Jarrod Parker. Then in the ninth inning Morse hit a ball to center field off of A’s closer Grant Balfour that could not even be tracked by a TV camera because it left the yard so fast.

Morse now has four of the Mariners five home runs as a team so far this season (Franklin Gutierrez has the other). With the exception of a 7-1 victory on Tuesday, the Mariners have struggled offensively, a theme that is all too familiar for fans.

Morse can only do so much, and the team will need to see production increase from Jesus Montero and Kendrys Morales in the middle of the order if they want to score at all this season.

Morse is currently on pace for 162 home runs this year, hopefully he will continue this pace and get some support from his teammates in the upcoming three-game series against the Chicago White Sox.
