It was expected that the Toronto Blue Jays would be a team that would win the American League East in 2013. Toronto lost their first two games before finally winning on Thursday behind two home runs from J.P. Arencibia. Arencibia may be the one player that is under the radar some since the team got so many stars in the offseason to add to their roster. Toronto will win the division however, because of what Arencibia can do behind the plate and hitting.
Arencibia is just 27 years old and already has two seasons where he hit at least 18 home runs. The thing that has slowed him down in his young career though has been a low batting average. I think this is the season where he fixes that problem. I also believe that the additions of R.A. Dickey and Josh Johnson to the pitching staff may allow Arencibia to relax some at the plate because the team has better pitching this year for him to work with.
There are adjustments that still need to be made with Arencibia, but he looks to be improving every day and those two home runs during a slugfest help out a ton. Toronto is a team that has a ton of eyes on them this season, and their chances of winning went up with the additions, but keeping Arencibia may have been the best move. I would guess that he finishes with 20-25 home runs this season and a batting average that is around .250. That would be much better than the .219 and .233 he has hit the last two seasons. Arencibia is going to be the catcher for the next decade for the Blue Jays.
