There were huge expectations on R.A. Dickey coming into the 2013 season after winning the National League Cy Young award last season and being traded to the Toronto Blue Jays. After his first two starts for Toronto, Dickey is showing that last season’s performance could have been his best work. Dickey is 0-2 with an 8.44 ERA through two starts after getting hammered on Sunday afternoon. There must be serious worry about Dickey going forward.
The first two starts have been inside the dome for Dickey. That means there is no wind blowing about to allow his knuckleball to flutter around even more than it does already. The Blue Jays are 2-4 this season, and with fans and experts claiming the Blue Jays will win the division, Dickey has to turn around his season very quickly. Dickey is supposed to start again on Saturday on the road in Kansas City. I believe that will be the biggest test about whether this season could be saved by him.
The game will be outside, and if the knuckleball is getting hammered, the Blue Jays have to worry about how bad Dickey might be for the rest of the season. It is only two starts obviously and Dickey could turn it around in short order, but in the world of what have you done for me lately, people are getting restless. Dickey has just one season of more than ten wins other than last season, so maybe the expectations were too high. The next couple outings will show a lot about where this season goes for Dickey and the Blue Jays.
