1-18: That was the Chicago Cubs’ road record against National League West teams during the 2012 MLB season. Their only win came on Sep. 30 against the Arizona Diamondbacks. That 19th game was the only thing that kept them from going winless in road games against an entire division.

Fans should take solace knowing that the Cubs will host their first four-game series of the season against the defending World Series champion San Francisco Giants. With a 3-5 record, the Cubs will try to get back on track. Before a 6-3 win on Apr. 9, the Cubs had lost four consecutive games. They’re a Carlos Marmol blown save from a 4-4 record.

Probable pitchers for this upcoming series against the Giants include Scott Feldman, Carlos Villanueva, Jeff Samardzija and Edwin Jackson. Each pitcher’s start got knocked back one day after the Apr. 10 rubber match between the Milwaukee Brewers and Cubs was postponed because of unsatisfactory weather.

Both teams are heavily dependent on the effectiveness of their pitching staffs and bullpen. Although the Giants have limited slugging potential, their offense has hitters who are capable of producing in clutch situations. Heading into Wednesday, they have a 5-3 record. They’re 0.5 games back of the Diamondbacks.

How much will the additional rest help the Cubs? That postponement came at a nice time. From Apr. 3 through May 5, the Cubs were scheduled to play 32 games in 33 days. This delay gives their starting rotation and bullpen some time to regroup. The one negative is that it forces Travis Wood out of the rotation until the next series. The Cubs need Feldman to have his best performance because many of these games should end in pitchers’ duels.

The following slideshow is a brief summary of each probable pitcher and matchup for the Cubs vs. Giants series. Continue with slideshow.
