The Arizona Diamondbacks received a much needed quality start from their starting pitcher Wade Miley against the Pittsburgh Pirates in the afternoon game on Wednesday, winning 10-2. The Diamondbacks were looking to avoid being swept for the first time this season at Chase Field.
Arizona had their best pitcher on mound that should at least give them a chance at winning one game over the Pirates. The Diamondbacks starting pitchers were having problems in this series in keeping the Pirates off the scoreboard in the first inning.
The first two games of series the Pirates managed to score a total of 10 runs off both Trevor Cahill and Brandon McCarthy. The issue that Cahill and McCarthy had was that they were leaving too many of their pitches up in the strike zone. The two pitchers had problems with locating their pitches, and they also had a problem with putting the Pirates hitters away when they were ahead in the count.
The reason why Miley was so successful in the game was that he just kept it simple. Miley had a game plan where his goal was to get ahead and pitch to his strengths.
One of his biggest strengths is that he knows to locate his fastball with precision. Miley was attacking the Pirates lineup by locating his fastball early in the count, and then he would switch to his off speed pitches to put the hitters away.
The one area that Miley has improved from last season is that he has done a much better job of putting hitters away when he gets two strikes on a hitter. Wade Miley pitched great today and showed why he could be the ace of Diamondbacks starting rotation with his performance.
