Everyone knows that David Price is the ace of the Tampa Bay Rays pitching staff but even Price himself has had good things to say about the young man that is bringing up the latter part of their five man rotation, Alex Cobb. Cobb is going into just his second full season, having had only 23 starts at the major league level a year ago. During spring training he talked about making simple changes that would help him improve. He has only made one start this season but already he looks better.

The pitch selection as well as the quality of the pitches seems to be better all around for Cobb going back to spring training. I think what the Rays are seeing from their young talent is the natural maturing of his pitching style as he gets more starts under his belt. He is learning to pitch not just throw the ball up to the plate. It is very possible that he will not continue his scoreless inning streak far into the game with the Boston Red Sox Friday night but he will give them a tough few innings to score runs I bet.

For certain Cobb is figuring out how to get big leaguers out. He seems better prepared overall than he was a year ago. You can chalk some of it up to baseball maturity but also his coaches have been good for him while he made his changes. Still his style is evolving but so far it looks like the Rays have yet another good young pitcher that could be several starts away from being considered great.
