Miami Marlins Rumors: Former Saves Leader In Crosshairs?

Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

The awful start for the Miami Marlins is not the way the team probably expected to start the season. At least not with one win in the first 10 games of the season, and part of the problem being from the one thing the team thought that could be a rock for the beginning of the season–the bullpen.

The Marlins bullpen allowed two runs to cross the plate in the top of the 10th inning in a 3-1 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies Friday night, thus setting off more smoke alarms from the ‘pen than ever before. It makes you think if Miami is really searching for someone on the market to help them out.

Miami has been connected to free agent reliever Francisco Rodriguez, but will have to beat out the Milwaukee Brewers among others if they want his services this season. Rodriguez is coming off a 2012 with the Brewers where he pitched in 72 innings and had an ERA of 4.38 as a setup man for John Axford. He could be better fitted for the Marlins because he could be back at the closer position, a role he played well with the Los Angeles Angels and the New York Mets back in the day.

An aging free agent, Rodriguez may not have a lot of stuff left, but the Marlins do not seem to care. They have the third worst bullpen in the league and closer Steve Cishek is not doing so well either. Cishek owns a 15.43 ERA after three appearances this season. Not something to be proud of.
