New York Yankees Play Sweet Caroline in Honor of Boston Marathon Victims (Video)

David Richard-USA Today Sports

As it was reported earlier in the day on Tuesday, the New York Yankees played Sweet Caroline in honor of the Boston Red Sox and the victims of the Boston Marathon explosions that occurred on Monday.

Take a look at the video below:

The Red Sox honored their city in their own right, defeating the Cleveland Indians on Tuesday night in the first professional sports event from the city since the explosion and twin bombings that killed three people on Boylston Street. Playing with heavy hearts, the Red Sox scored seven runs in the second inning, holding off the Indians thanks to a great pitching performance led early on by starter Felix Doubront.

Sweet Caroline of course is one of the trademark songs associated with the Red Sox during home games at Fenway Park and is played each game in Boston during the middle of the eighth inning. Playing away from home following a horrific and tragic attack on Monday, it’s quite remarkable to see such a touching moment from the Red Sox arch rival.

While the playing of Sweet Caroline was new to Yankees’ fans, it does send a message in regards to the support circling around the city of Boston in the hours and days following this act of terrorism. Fueled by support across the country, the Red Sox also offered a number of inspiring messages in their own right — hanging a “Boston Strong” Red Sox jersey in the dugout with the number 617 printed on it, as seen above. 617 is the area code for the Boston area.

Boston improved to 9-4 on the season with their Tuesday night victory.
