Arizona Diamondbacks’ Wade Miley Loses Focus Against New York Yankees

Anthony Gruppuso-USA Today Sports

Wade Miley has pitched like the Arizona Diamondbacks best pitcher in their starting rotation this season, and he was making his first career start in Yankee Stadium against the New York Yankees on Wednesday night.

Miley was pitching in this game like he could make no mistakes to the hitters that he faced in the Yankees line up. The success he had at the beginning of the game was a result of him using his breaking pitches effectively.

However, there was one inning where he seemed to lose the focus that he had at the start of the game, and struggled with the command and location of his fastball.

The reason that Miley has been pitching great in his starts this season is that he showed the ability to locate his pitches, and not struggle with the command of his fastball. He looked like he ran out of gas in his last inning of work, as he was leaving his fastball up in the strike zone.

The Yankees were smart in their approach at the plate by not swinging at any of these pitches, and they made him work hard to get them out. Miley was able to get the Yankee hitters out earlier in the game by mixing his pitches effectively.

This was something he was not able to do in his last inning of work, as he decided to exclusively use his fastball. If Miley would have mixed in his breaking pitches, and then went to his fastball occasionally, the results may have been better for him.

Miley still had a great start even with the issues he had in this game, and he will bounce back and perform better in his next start.
