I’m not sure when Jason Giambi because the guy that I love to root for but it might have happened way at the beginning of his career. It could have happened in his elder statesman days with the Colorado Rockies. Either way, I loved seeing him have a great game against the Houston Astros on Saturday. He proved that his bat still has plenty of pop left in it even as he is veteran enough to achieve milestones.
Giambi has been a spot starter for Terry Francona this season and his average isn’t great. The fact that the vast majority of his few hits are homers makes his slugging percentage quite high though. Today Giambi achieved a milestone with his homer against the Astros. He has now homered against every single team in Major League Baseball. That’s a pretty cool thing to notch on anyone’s belt.
That wasn’t all he did today however. He went 2 for 4 with a double, a homer and 5 RBI. How is that for a breakout game? Yes it came in a 19-6 blowout the Indians achieved over the Astros but so what. It still happened. Plus some of tonight’s exploits happened before the game got out of hand.
Whatever your view on the little milestone for Giambi, he is difficult not to cheer for. As his impact with the Indians begins to spill out from his enormously important clubhouse presence onto the field, the Indians might wind up with the older DH option in there more times than not.
