Colorado Rockies Not Intimidated by NL Best Atlanta Braves

Chris Humphreys-USA Today Sports

When the NL East leading Atlanta Braves arrived in Denver on Monday to face the NL West leading Colorado Rockies it was 25 degrees and snowing. Needless to say game one was postponed.

That was frustrating to both teams because they were anxious to prove they were worthy of first place. MLB experts are saying the Braves hot start will not last and the rest of the loaded NL East will catch up to them, and the Rockies… well they aren’t even supposed to be in this conversation.

They got the chance to face off with a double-header Tuesday in the lingering Rocky Mountain frigid temperatures. The Braves took both games causing many Colorado doubters to say I told you so. But not so fast my friends–the Rockies are a scrappy little team and look as though they have the fight in them to last it out…for a while anyway.

On Wednesday with the weather much warmer and the sun shining bright, the Rockies outlasted Atlanta and won in dramatic fashion in extra innings.

The victory kept Colorado not only on top of the NL West, it keeps them up there with the Braves who have the best record in baseball.

The Rockies may be brought back to Earth before its all said in done because they play in the same division with the San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers who are both expected to be there in the end.

The thing Colorado has going for it is their low expectations. So at this point, they can’t be told they don’t belong at the top which makes it scary for opponents when they have to play the scrappy Rockies. We’ll see how rookie manager Walt Weiss handles his young team as the season plays out.
