Will Anyone Else Besides Matt Harvey Step Up for the New York Mets?

New York Mets Not Happy With Dillon Gee’s Performance

Howard Smith – USA TODAY Sports

There weren’t a whole lot of expectations for the New York Mets this season: they traded away their Cy Young winner, Johan Santana was going to miss the season due to injury and the entire offense was a question mark outside of David Wright.

To the surprise of many, though, the Mets’ offense has actually produced at a high level. Not only is Wright doing normal David Wright things, but players like John Buck, Lucas Duda and Daniel Murphy have really hit well for the Mets all season long.

However, their pitching staff is an entirely different story.

Yes, Matt Harvey has been fantastic for the Metropolitans, but the rest of that starting rotation is a disaster waiting to happen. Between Shaun Marcum, Dillon Gee, Jon Niese and Jeremy Hefner, the Mets don’t even have a positive fWAR number. That, my friends, is never a good thing, even if you are not a fan of sabermetrics.

The positive thing about the shaky pitching the Mets are putting out there four out of every five days is that it really cannot get any worse. I really doubt Gee is going to have an ERA near 6.00 over the course of the season, and Marcum is capable of being a formidable starter after Harvey.

But, it’s really a shame that the Mets have had such bad luck with their rotation. It seems like only yesterday the Mets had a promising and deep rotation with guys like Santana, Mike Pelfrey and John Maine.

I guess that’s just the way it goes sometimes, especially for a team with the kind of bad luck that the Mets normally have.
