The off-season was eventful for Joe Saunders as he remained on the free agent market for a time waiting on which team would scoop him up. Not knowing who he would take the mound for could easily have been stressful as could the fact that his then team the Baltimore Orioles were not giving him good offers. Fast forward to Monday night’s game between Saunders new team the Seattle Mariners and his former team the Orioles.
All Saunders did was give up two runs over nine innings as he gained the shut down complete game victory. He wasn’t spectacular but solid and strong just like he was for the Orioles in their playoff run a year ago. I’m not saying that the Orioles necessarily miss Saunders or even that he misses them. What I am saying is that Saunders delivered a message last night loud and clear whether he wanted to or not.
Everyone could use a pitcher with the ability to scatter a few hits, give up only a couple of runs and pitch nine innings. The best teams in the majors would have a hard time turning someone like that down and yet so many of them did turn Saunders down. He may never win the Cy Young award and may only get recognized from time to time but the way he can do things like this is exactly what made him more valuable that many teams seemed to believe. I guess they can all eat their hearts out.
