Could Chase Headley Be Among Them?

San Diego Padres third baseman Chase Headley is known for his impressive ball game, his multiple awards and accolades, and his favor among fans as being one of the most talented players on the lineup. And now, Headley may be adding another bullet to that list: highest paid Padre in club history.

As it stands, Headley is already one of the highest paid Padres on the current team. At a yearly salary of $8.575 million, he only trails behind outfielder Carlos Quentin, who takes home $9.5 million in income. With the new contract proposal, the exact amount of which has not been disclosed yet, Headley would be making much more than Quentin and the rest of his teammates. However, Headley has repeatedly stated that he does not want to discuss contract extensions during the regular season, as he feels it would distract him from playing to the best of his abilities, so without some powerful convincing, the details of the contract negotiations will not be made clear for many more months.

The MLB is known for sky-high salaries and huge contract deals to keep prime players on the team. Forget Quentin’s $9.5 million, some ballplayers make more than entire teams, in comparison. But in terms of other third basemen in the Major Leagues, where does Chase Headley stack up with his current salary? In the 2013 season, the five highest paid third basemen in the MLB are: Alex Rodriguez, Miguel Cabrera, Adrian Beltre, Ryan Zimmerman and David Wright.

Soon, Headley might join these players, or maybe even surpass them.
