MLB Rumors: Is Paul Konerko On the Trade Block?

Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports

I know it’s early in the season and MLB Rumors won’t heat up for a few weeks, but I wanted to take a look at one potential rumor that could gain some legs over the next few weeks. The Chicago White Sox are in for an uphill battle this year, and many have them finishing second behind the Detroit Tigers. With the emergence of the Kansas City Royals, it makes the Sox road much more difficult. Throw in the Gavin Floyd tommy john surgery and the Sox are in even more trouble. With all that being said, the Chicago White Sox could be a perfect seller at the trade deadline this year with their older veteran players. Let’s start with Paul Konerko.

Konerko has been the heart and soul of the White Sox for a long time, and his career numbers are some of the best in franchise history. He’s also one of the best “professionals” in the game and well respected by virtually everyone, including me- a Chicago Cubs fan. The White Sox don’t exactly have the best farm system in baseball and I think it’s a perfect opportunity to reload. Konerko can still hit and I think the Sox could get a very good package for him from a contender looking to add a bat.

Look, sometimes it’s time to move on. It’s not a knock on the White Sox who have been very good for a long time. However, they’re getting older and I don’t know if they have the horses to win this race with better teams. Wouldn’t it make sense for the White Sox to say okay- let’s reload and spend some money in a year or so. Let’s get younger and better for the long run.

Paul Konerko is a professional and I believe would welcome the trade to a contender if that’s what the White Sox want to do. I think for both sides, this is a trade that could make a lot of sense. It would be nice to get both the White Sox and Cubs firing for the city of Chicago but both teams have a lot of work to do in that regard.

We’ll see if my hunch and prediction about the White Sox is correct as we head into June.
