Sometimes sluggers have to go on the disabled list. It stinks when it happens but it just happens in Major League Baseball from time to time. It happened to the Oakland Athletics early on when Yoenis Cespedes went down with an injury. They played well in his absence and even added a few more hurt along the way. When Cespedes came back however he made a point of showing the reason he is one of the leaders of this team.
Check out what he has done since returning. He has collected 10 hits, scored 9 runs over the first 9 games since returning, hit three homers and driven in 11 runs. Even after missing a couple of weeks, Cespedes is still among the team leaders in most every offensive category. You think they missed him? I think it is safe to say that even almost a dozen games later, the A’s are extremely happy to look out and see a hot hitting Cespedes on the field.
The only thing that hasn’t taken off quickly for Cespedes is the pure batting average but that will come in time. For now he is knocking the cover off of the ball when he hits it and has a few K’s to show for his hard work when he doesn’t. For a hitter that has the clutch capabilities of Cespedes, he doesn’t need a lot of time worrying about the average. If the Oakland A’s want to salvage any of the final games of this series with the Cleveland Indians they are going to need to make full use of Cespedes running on all systems and some other guys. Otherwise this might be a sweep that they would rather forget.
