On Friday, the Milwaukee Brewers will hit the road and take on the Cincinnati Reds. It will be the beginning of a huge ten-game road trip where the Brewers will face all three teams that are above them in the National League Central.
Milwaukee’s ace Yovani Gallardo will take the ball on Friday and he needs to give his team a solid performance. Although his record is 3-1, Gallardo’s earned run average is a disappointing 4.50. Even more alarming is the fact that his strikeouts are down quite a bit and the hits are up. It isn’t a sky is falling kind of worry, but you would like to see a little more out of the guy that is supposed to be your best pitcher.
What the Brewers could use on Friday is seven scoreless innings from Gallardo, who hasn’t had a scoreless outing yet this season. It would be a great way to start an important part of the schedule, plus anytime you can take it easy on the bullpen you should, especially a volatile bullpen like the Brewers have.
By the time this road trip is over, the Brewers should have a good sense where they are as a team. Are they actually contenders who should look to add a few pieces or pretenders that just might become sellers as the trade deadline approaches? Right now, with the team a couple of games below .500, I would lean towards the latter, but maybe the Brew Crew can prove me wrong.
