Over the past few weeks the Baltimore Orioles have let their voice be heard in the American League East. Now what was a sizable early lead by the Boston Red Sox has evaporated into a three-way virtual tie for first between the O’s, Red Sox and New York Yankees. The Orioles just took two out of three from the tough Kansas City Royals which shows how good they are playing. Going into the weekend series sets they might have the best chance yet to claim first place all by themselves.
The Minnesota Twins are not pushovers right now but they are a slightly more manageable foe than the Royals, or at least they should be. With Jason Hammel going to start the three game set, I think they could take the three. The Red Sox also have a less than superb challenge in the Toronto Blue Jays. The Sox have won two of three the last two series against the Jays. Still, if the Orioles can put together a sweep they could nearly guarantee a first place spot by themselves.
The Yankees are in the mix as well but they face the Royals. Not only do they face the Royals but they face their three best pitchers including James Shields in game two. It will not be an easy task to win those games for the Yanks. Also of the three teams we are talking about the Orioles have the best record over the last couple of weeks which has led them to catch the other two. Trends being what they are, the O’s should pass the Yanks and Sox soon. It might as well be now.
