If there’s anything to take away from the beginning of the 2013 MLB season so far–it would be Milwaukee Brewers shortstop Jean Segura is quickly emerging into one of the league’s top players. So when Milwaukee Brewers rumors heat up about the team trying to work out a deal with Segura as quickly as possible–it shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone.
The Brewers are quickly working hard to reach an extension with Segura, but whether or not the two sides are close to a deal is a different story. The fact that Segura hasn’t even played a full season yet in the big leagues makes this type of situation difficult to figure out when it comes to how much money the team should put on the table–but the problem may be more on Segura’s end instead of Milwaukee’s.
If anything, Segura is most likely cautious about signing a deal too soon considering there’s a good chance his numbers are only going to get better with more experience–which means he may be able to fight for a larger deal in another year or two. From Milwaukee’s perspective, it seems like they’re pushing so hard for a long-term deal now rather than later to save some money in case Segura’s value does continue to go out–which means this situation will be an interesting one to keep an eye on.
Either way, the Brewers just need to do whatever it takes to make sure Segura is around for the long run. When considering that Segura is already batting .368 on the year to go along with six home runs, 16 RBIs and 13 stolen bases, the Brewers should be willing to pay whatever the shortstop wants at this point.
