The month of April couldn’t have gone much worse for Tyler Flowers. After becoming the Chicago White Sox‘ everyday catcher this spring, Flowers had the difficult job of replacing A.J. Pierzynski. Despite hitting homers in the first two games of the season, Flowers only drove in seven runs and batted just .177 in April.

Now half way through the month of May, it seems as if Flowers is beginning to settle into his new role with the Sox. Although he’s still hitting a dismal .210 for the year, the 27-year-old catcher has started to string together some good at-bats. In his last three games, Flowers has five base hits, including a clutch RBI double in Tuesday night’s 4-2 win over the Minnesota Twins.

Flowers was also able to throw out a potential base stealer Tuesday night, giving him seven caught stealing for 2013 — that’s good for second-most in the American League, and he’s been one of the lone bright spots defensively for Chicago.

Like Flowers, the Sox are trying to turn their season around. One of the main reasons the Pale Hose find themselves in last place in the AL Central is because of their lack of offense and sluggish defense. If Flowers is able to add a consistent, run-producing bat in the back end of the lineup, the Sox offensive numbers should begin to improve. Continuing to give the South Siders’ defense a lift should equal more wins for Chicago as well.

With the 2013 season fully under way and the Sox still searching for difference markers, the time is now for Flowers to finally to step out of A.J. Pierzynski’s shadow.
