Kansas City Royals James Shields Has Advantage over Adam Wainwright
The Kansas City Royals are about to begin a series against the St. Louis Cardinals that will start with a great pitching duel between James Shields and Adam Wainwright. This is one of the pitching duels that looks good from before the season even began. So far both pitchers have proven to be their team’s ace pitcher so which pitcher holds the advantage for the coming match-up? I think in the end the guy with the best chance to come away with a win is Shields.
If you just look at the team matchups the clear front runner should be the Cardinals though I don’t know that it will be that simple. In his last several starts Wainwright has been solid in most but not always lights out from start to finish. The Cardinals are playing like the better team right now but Wainwright, as good as he is pitching, isn’t showing as consistent as Shields has been of late. Though Shields has a few losses in his last several starts, he hasn’t given up more than two runs in any of them.
Keying all of this will be if Wainwright is on. If he is then the Cards will have a good shot to beat Shields. If however, Wainwright is in one of the moods where he gives up a few runs that might be enough for Shields to put the brakes on the Royals losing streak right now. One on one I would take Shields over Wainwright though Wainwright is certainly one of the best in the game right now. As much bad luck as he has had of late, Shields is having a stellar season that should show when he is forced to either pitch shutout ball or likely lose.
