New York Mets With A Chance To Keep It Going Against Miami Marlins
Last night, the New York Mets completed an improbable four-game Subway Series sweep of the New York Yankees. The Mets needed those wins in the worst possible way, and at least for the time being, they have some momentum moving in the right direction.
Now that the series with their crosstown rivals is over, the Mets need to find a way to harness the energy and momentum they gained over the past week and continue to win games.
On the heels of their five-game winning streak, the Mets are exactly where any other team wants to be: preparing for a series with MLB‘s worst team, the Miami Marlins. Playing the Marlins gives the Mets the perfect opportunity to continue its winning streak, slowly creep back towards .500, and possibly become a competitive part of the NL East.
The Mets beating the Yankees on four consecutive days was as surprising as anything that has happened in baseball this season, and should be considered more of an aberration than anything else. But, sweeping a team like the Marlins is something that the team is fully capable of doing, and it’s the kind of thing they’ll need to do to retain momentum and bring their record back to respectability.
The Mets won’t have their top pitchers available against the Marlins, although Matt Harvey will pitch the series finale on Sunday. That said, they shouldn’t need the front of their rotation to shut down a lineup like Miami’s. The trio of Shaun Marcum, Collin McHugh, and Harvey should be good enough to produce three Mets wins.
Furthermore, the lineup that found a way to produce clutch hits against a quality Yankees pitching staff should fair even better against the Marlins pitching staff.
The Mets need to take advantage of this opportunity fresh off their sweep of the Yankees to play a pitiful team like the Marlins. If the Mets are going to resemble a competitive team in the slightest for the rest of this season, then they need to be able to sweep the Marlins this weekend, and not let the momentum gained go to waste.
