Series preview: Los Angeles Dodgers at Colorado Rockies
It is safe to say the Los Angeles Dodgers enter their weekend series against the Colorado Rockies playing at their lowest point of the season. They are in last place, are banged up and sit 7.5 games back of first place in the National League West, a division which they are 5-16 against this season.
The good news is that they will send their top three pitchers to the mound this weekend in Clayton Kershaw, Zack Greinke and Hyun-Jin Ryu. The bad news is the Dodgers will be in Coors Field, a place they have lost eight of their last 11 meetings while being outscored 76-48.
Here are the pitching matchups for this weekend’s games.
Friday: Dodgers-Clayton Kershaw (5-3, 1.68 ERA) vs. Rockies-Jon Garland (3-6, 5.53 ERA)
Kershaw is coming off of his first loss since April 14 and will enter a park he does not like pitching in. Coors Field has been an uncomfortable spot for the former Cy Young award winner. During his last two starts there, he has surrendered 11 runs and 14 hits. Rockies OF Dexter Fowler has had a lot of success against the southpaw, hitting .400 (12-for-30) during his career. Carlos Gonzalez also has two HRs against Kershaw.
Garland has struggled since a fast start in April. He has lost his last four starts heading into the matchup against his former team. Andre Ethier is 4-for-9 against him in his career, and both Adrian Gonzalez and Ramon Hernandez are batting .300 against the right-hander. Expect Carl Crawford to get the day off on Saturday as he is just 1-for-18 against Garland.
Saturday: Dodgers- Zack Greinke(2-1, 4.38 ERA) vs. Rockies- Jhoulys Chacin (3-3, 3.90 ERA)
Greinke has not recorded an out in the fifth inning during his last two starts and is desperate for a solid start to get back on track. The Rockies could be the remedy he wants. No Rockie player has had much success against him, including stars Troy Tulowitzki, Fowler and Todd Helton. The trio of Rockies is 3-for-33 lifetime against Greinke.
Chacin has been an inning-eater this year, tossing at least five innings in all of his starts. He has had success against the Dodgers’ hitters in his career, especially against Juan Uribe, who is 0-for-15 with six strikeouts. The only Dodger who enjoys seeing Chacin on the mound is Ethier, who is 7-for-16 with eight walks.
Sunday: Dodgers- Hyun-Jin Ryu (6-2, 2.89 ERA) vs. Rockies- Jorge De La Rosa (6-3, 3.16 ERA)
This pitching matchup is a rematch from earlier this season when Ryu helped the Dodgers top De La Rosa 6-2 at Dodgers Stadium. Ryu struck out 12 batters during the game while De La Rosa was tagged for six runs in three innings. De La Rosa has never pitched well against the Dodgers. He is 0-8 against the Blue Crew with a 6.75 ERA in his career.
Tigers' Will Be Fine With Holaday As No. 2 Catcher
Although it would still make sense for the Detroit Tigers to add a left-handed hitting backup catcher, they should do just fine with Bryan Holaday. Read More
