The Detroit Tigers are still in first place after having put up with a serious charge by the Cleveland Indians. Part of the reason they are still resting at the American League Central’s top position is the great run that starting pitcher Max Scherzer has been on. He had another dominant performance Thursday against the Tampa Bay Rays as the Tigers won. Their lead in the central currently sits at 2.5 games which is a little distance compared to how close the two teams were a short time ago.

There is a word for the job Scherzer has been doing this year for the Tigers: Good. Yes, as simple as it sounds, he has been really good this year. His 8 – 0 record and 3.24 ERA speaks to his success this season. Over the past few starts he has been even better. Occasionally, averaging about every fourth start, Scherzer will give up a few runs. For the most part he does what managers everywhere ask of all of their starters. He gives his team a chance to win.

I’m not sure I would put Scherzer down as someone that I knew for a fact would give me a shut down performance like I would his teammate Justin Verlander but he is a quality starter that eats tons of innings. There is a lot to be said positive about a guy that pitches past the sixth inning in most of his starts. Without a doubt Scherzer is a big contributor to the first place status of the Tigers and his recent win helped keep a little breathing room between them and the Indians. Call it a good day’s work.
