After winning the first two games of the three-game series between themselves and the Baltimore Orioles, the Tampa Bay Rays goofed up and gave the O’s ten runs on Sunday. Okay, so they got creamed but actually it could have been worse. They outscored the Orioles 6 – 1 from the bottom of the fourth inning on to lose only 10 – 7 when they had trailed by as much as 9 – 1 at one point. That shows fight and determination to me. I think the Rays are getting ready to make their run and that could start with the three-game series against the Boston Red Sox.
Alex Cobb couldn’t be any more perfect as the man to take the mound against the division leading Red Sox. The Rays have shown signs of a big run towards the leaders of the AL East but a few key losses here and there have kept them four games out. Well there is nothing like a three game series with the division leader to take care of a four game deficit. The big bad Red Sox are going to be right there at Tropicana Field and ripe for the picking.
Cobb has been great, which is why it’s good that he is starting the game against Lackey who has also been pretty good. You have to go all the way back to May 10 to find the last time Cobb even gave up three earned runs. Yet over that same span he is only 2 – 0 because of lack of run support. Being at home should help matters a little bit though the road isn’t such a terrible place for the Red Sox. The only team that has lost fewer road games is the St. Louis Cardinals. It will be a tough series but this is the Rays chance to make some big time ground up and beat up on the division leaders. Let’s see what they have.
