The New York Yankees continue their daunting west coast road trip tonight in a showdown with the Oakland Athletics. The Yanks began their road trip with a four game series against the Seattle Mariners and took three out of the four games. After their good start on the west coast, New York will start the series against Oakland in a pitching matchup that includes a former Yankees pitcher, Bartolo Colon, and the ace of the Yankees’ current staff, CC Sabathia.
Colon comes into tonight with a 7-2 record with a 3.14 ERA and 46 strikeouts in 12 games pitched, but has been almost unhittable lately, throwing up a 0.90 ERA with a 1.07 WHIP over his last four starts. The Yankees offense has been starting to heat up with the recent returns of Mark Teixeira and Kevin Youkilis from the disabled list, but the way Colon has been throwing lately, even with him being a familiar face, runs could be hard to come by.
Sabathia is 6-4 with a 3.74 ERA and 80 strikeouts in 13 games pitched so far this year. He is also coming in hot, pitching a complete game victory over the Cleveland Indians on June 5. He wasn’t as dominant as usual, giving up seven hits and walking one resulting in four runs. He did strikeout nine as he would grind through a 116 pitch performance in which Sabathia did not have his best stuff. But that is what you get when CC is on the mound, even when he’s not his sharpest; he keeps battling and always gives the Yankees a chance to win the game.
