The Colorado Rockies are in the mix atop the National League West right now, trailing the division-leading Arizona Diamondbacks by just 2.5 games. However, their game against the Washington Nationals on Thursday afternoon did not do them any favors. Not only did they get beat by a count of 5-4, but they also lost their two biggest bats, Troy Tulowitzki and Carlos Gonzalez to injuries.

Gonzalez’s injury occurred before he even got to take an at-bat. In the bottom of the first inning, Car-Go was on-deck when a foul ball was lined his way and struck him in the foot. He immediately left the game without taking his at-bat and is currently listed as day-to-day. Tulowitzki’s injury on the other hand is a bit more serious.

Tulowitzki tried to make a play on a ball at shortstop in the eighth inning and injured his ribs. He was taken out immediately to go get an MRI. According to reports from the Denver Post, Tulowitzki’s MRI results revealed a broken rib and he is almost inevitably headed for the DL.

Both Gonzalez and Tulowitzki are in the midst of having monster seasons, as expected for two of the better players in the MLB. Gonzalez is hitting .299 with a .993 OPS in addition to 18 home runs, 52 RBIs, six triples, 14 doubles and 12 stolen bases. Tulowitzki’s numbers have been monstrous this year. He’s boasting a .347 average and a 1.048 OPS with 16 home runs, 16 doubles and 51 RBIs in four less games played than Gonzalez.

Tulowitzki has had troubles with injuries in recent years, missing most of last season and it had been fun watching him play with good health this season. Gonzalez will likely miss a few games and be back out on the field producing, but Tulowitzki could be out for a while as rib injuries are notoriously hard to predict. One thing that is for certain, though, is that the Rockies will miss both players while they are out of the lineup.
