While they certainly have not had the best, nor certainly the most injury free season, the Minnesota Twins are not completely out of playoff chances this season. If there is any October fight in the Twins this season they are about to have the perfect chance to show it with the American League Central leaders, the Detroit Tigers in town. If they are going to compete with the big boys of Major League Baseball, it doesn’t get much bigger than this.
One plus they have in their favor is that the Tigers just lost a series to the Kansas City Royals, showing their bullpen weakness. Bullpen is going to be a key in this series without a doubt. The Twins might not have the most explosive team but even if they did they would have issues facing the three starters coming their way: Rick Porcello, Anibal Sanchez and Doug Fister.
What they are going to need to do is do whatever they can to hang around long enough to have a chance when they get passed those guys. If they can chase them early or work the counts a lot to run the pitch count up that would work as well. This will be a challenging weekend for the Twins but they are at home, they know the Tigers are beatable right now if they play a great game. The Twins have gotten pretty good pitching themselves as they have won 2 in a row and six of their last ten games. Good starting pitching will also be vital if they want to have a chance to win the series.
