There are articles up at the Baltimore Orioles official site right now about all of the injured players that are on their way back. This Orioles team is not fully healthy and yet they are still within a couple of wins of first place all by themselves. The Boston Red Sox have held first in the American League East for a while now but the O’s can take it from them with just two more wins. Though I admit that is much easier to type than to do.

A walk-off bloop single from Chris Davis won the first game of the four-game series with the AL East leading Red Sox. Friday was a close game but the Orioles got the shutout and a major league-leading 22nd homer from Davis. Whatever the O’s plan to throw to the plate tomorrow, they had better be ready for a fight. Saturday and Sunday’s games could be the most important games of the year for the Orioles. Naturally then the Red Sox would have two of their better pitchers going.

Saturday they face John Lackey who has been dominant from time to time but also has shown signs of being hittable. Jon Lester has been a great pitcher in the past but his last few starts don’t put him in that conversation at all. He got shelled for seven runs against Tampa Bay Rays his last time out. Lackey should be hittable for the Orioles powerful offense and they hope for a repeat performance from Lester.

If they get the runs going against those two pitchers the only thing remaining will be a respectable performance from their starters. If they can get that as well the Orioles will find themselves a half game in first place by Sunday night. At worst they need to split the final two games of the series to stay threateningly close to the Sox.
