San Diego Padres Carry Momentum into Series with Arizona Diamondbacks
The San Diego Padres might not be playing quite as well as they did for a while through the end of April and the start of May but they are still in the back section of contention. If the National League West were a movie theatre the Padres are in the back few rows but they still can see the screen fairly well, just not as good as the guys in front of them. They have a big series at home coming against the first place Arizona Diamondbacks that could vastly improve their seat if you will.
Not that I think the Padres would be afraid of the DBacks on a normal daily basis but coming off of the recent three game sweep of the Atlanta Braves they have to feel extremely good about their chances against the DBacks. The Braves threw everything they could at the Padres but just couldn’t pull out a win. In the midst of that the Padres got good starting pitching but the bullpen faltered a bit.
In the DBacks series they should have a guaranteed chance to win in at least a couple of games. Jason Marquis is going in the Sunday game and has been pitching as well as he has ever pitched in his career of late. If the Padres can grab one of the first two games or both of them, they will feel really good about their chances on Sunday for a series win or a sweep, whatever the case may be.
Of course if the starters are chased early or the DBacks are around late when the ‘pen comes in to take over the game, the Padres might find themselves in trouble. Their best chance of winning the series will include them scoring on every possible bad pitch which is something they seemed to do against the Braves. If they can do that again they will look better in the NL West than they do now.
