James Shields Leads Kansas City Royals in Second Place Showdown
The Kansas City Royals have been on an absolute tear of late in the American League. They are tied for the best record in the last ten games with a couple of other teams at 8 – 2. While they have made up some ground they find themselves still five games out and still in third place. They might can work on the five games behind stat this week but they most certainly can work on the fact that they want second place in the American League Central. They begin a series tonight with the current second place team, the Cleveland Indians.
If this series were to have started about a week ago the favorite would have been easy to choose as the Indians were mired in an eight game losing streak. The Indians turned that around this last week however and have played about as good as the Royals have in the past few days. That makes it an even bigger showdown between these two clubs and if I am the Royals there is no one on the team I would rather have taking the ball other than James Shields.
Shields has gone 1 – 0 and given up only 5 runs in his last three starts which were each seven innings long. His ERA for the year is down to 2.79 with a 1.11 WHIP. Those stats are more than something to be proud of, they are amazingly good. He has only one start where he has given up more than two runs since the end of April. The Royals hope that streak continues so that they can continue marching passed the Indians into second place and take aim at the Detroit Tigers.
