Back in the latter part of April and the start of May the San Diego Padres were the hottest team in all of Major League Baseball. Then they weren’t anymore and fell like a stone downward in the division. Well guess what happened in June? They decided to be one of the hottest teams in baseball again. All they have done this past week is complete a total smashing of the Atlanta Braves and the Arizona Diamondbacks. The sweep of the Diamondbacks really made things interesting in the National League West.

Thanks to the dirty work the Padres did the NL West now includes four teams separated by only 2.0 games. The Colorado Rockies owe one to the Padres for helping them get within one half game of the division lead. Though the Rockies are the closest to the top spot in the division the team with the most momentum without a doubt is the Padres.

Their starting rotation, led by veteran Jason Marquis who might be on his way to a career year, is doing their job of keeping them in the game and allowing the offense time to get on the board. The result this month has been nothing but good for the Padres. I’m sure the San Francisco Giants and the Rockies both want to lay claim to the top spot in the NL West but I’m not so sure it will be the resting place of either on.

For sure who will end up in the lead of the division by the end of the season is up for grabs right now. I’m not so sure that whoever has the lead for the next month or so isn’t just keeping that place warm for the Padres. They suddenly look every bit as good as they did last year but are close enough to really make some noise.
